Theodolite HD is a versatile multi-function viewfinder app that offers a comprehensive set of tools for various purposes including land measurements, outdoor sports, navigation, and more. It combines a compass, two-axis inclinometer, rangefinder, GPS, map, nav calculator, and geo-overlay photo/movie camera into one indispensable app.

Initially released in 2009, Theodolite was among the pioneers of augmented reality (AR) apps and has since gained popularity with millions of users worldwide. It is widely used by professionals such as surveyors, geologists, architects, engineers, competitive sports enthusiasts, first responders, military personnel, and search and rescue workers.

One notable feature of Theodolite is the ability to take data-overlay photos and movies with 2X-8X zoom. This allows users to overlay geographical data, angle markings, date/time, author/company info, and project notes directly onto the media for future reference. Moreover, the app writes the same data into the metadata record of images, making them self-contained data records.

In addition to its advanced camera functions, Theodolite provides a built-in map with optional offline capabilities for outdoor use. The map includes topo contours, roads, trails, landmarks, campgrounds, ski lifts, and more. Live map markers consistently update distance/heading relative to the current location and display wayfinding information in the main viewfinder. Users can also draw polygons on the map to mark property boundaries and trails or import/export polygon data via KML.

Theodolite offers powerful collaboration features as well. Users can share map markers and nav calculator points with others via text messages or email. This enables various collaborative activities such as team land surveying, accident investigations, spotting wildfires, triangulation of landmarks, and advanced tactical observation and targeting. The app also allows enabling team tracking through an optional in-app purchase, which enables location sharing with up to 20 people on Theodolite's map.

Furthermore, serious users will appreciate Theodolite's features like reference angle mode, nav calculator, map marker import/export, manual and automatic data logging with CSV and KML export, clipboard integration, %grade display, mil compass readout, optical rangefinders with mil-based reticle and sniper-style stadiametric graphs, variable 4X-24X scope, and night filters for improved vision in dark conditions.

Theodolite supports various coordinate systems including military grid reference system (MGRS) coordinates, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates, British/Irish National Grids, US National Grid, Maidenhead locator system, Map Grid of Australia, and six latitude/longitude formats. Additionally, the optional Datum Pack expands the app's geodetic datums to over 230 options, improving position computation from GPS data across regions and countries worldwide.

The AR Layers in Theodolite include various navigational aids such as the sun, moon, planets, Polaris (North star), and the optional US Mountain Summits layer that displays over 70,000 US mountain summits in the viewfinder.

Theodolite has been featured in Apple Keynotes and has been a top-selling Navigation app in App Stores globally. Since its introduction in 2009, Theodolite has set the standard for augmented reality navigation. The app continues to embrace new technologies and hardware capabilities to push the boundaries of iOS app development.
